モンシロチョウは通常、白い羽に黒色の斑紋があるが、今回羽化したチョウの羽は薄墨色。5月中旬、理科の授業で3、4年生3人が自宅近くの畑で採集した幼虫やサナギ約20匹のうちから今月6日に羽化した。
自然史博物館によると、羽の形や目の色などからモンシロチョウに間違いなく、遺伝子の異常により、羽が全て黒色になった「黒化型」と考えられるという。国内では2008年、京都府で１例が確認されている。
